| is fine, when you're not at the limits of adhesion. But in a panic stop, you want to use all brakes. The forward momentum of braking will put the vast majority of weight on your front tires, where most of your braking force needs to be. That weight has to come from somewhere, and that is the rear wheels. The weight over the rear wheels is very little during a panic or hard stop. If you give extra braking power to the rears by downshifting, you stand a very good chance of locking the rear wheels since the combined braking power of the rear brakes and the engine braking will overcome the little friction that is present between the rear tires and the ground. Locking up the rear end during a stop is a bad thing. I'm not berating you for your descision. I'm glad you made it out of the situation okay. I just don't want to hear about some kid who hits someone when he thought he had enough time to brake by throwing it into a lower gear.

Petz #2 And thanks to Guapo... I got my first ride in a Twinturbo... at speed... on a race track. I'll just say 'Damn' and leave it at that.- Tu 09/13/04 12:03:59Jeeeesus Christ - my Dad (after a ride in my Z) 12/26/04 |
